I DON'T THINK THERE IS ANYONE ELSE IN AMERICA THAT PREPARES MOUNTS THE WAY I DO. MOST MOUNTS SOLD ARE PLAIN-JANE, COOKIE-CUTTER FORM/SIZE, AND JUST SCRAP WOOD. The various mounts shown below show a few of the woods I use. THESE SHOULD BE VIEWED AS EXAMPLES ONLY, SINCE EACH IS ONE-OF-A-KIND. KEEP IN MIND THAT ALL MY WOODS COME AND GO, DEPENDING ON WHAT I FIND WHEN I AM OUT COLLECTING. I can mount any air plant on them, whether that be Staghorns, Tillandsias, Bromeliads, Spanish Moss, or various Orchids. The variety of mounted plants is as large as one's imagination allows. I will also sell just the mounts and if you require the material to mount your own plants, I can supply that at minimal cost. All my mounts are one-of-a-kind and include cedar, cypress, walnut, pine, cork, grape-vine, and bark planks of oak, hickory, and sweet-gum. I usually have a handful of exotic driftwood but I specialize in Mississippi Swamp woods. I also carry an assortment of cedar lattice and baskets and tree-fern slabs and totems. Contact me at email@example.com if you want something specific.
Staghorns mounted on cypress
These 18 mo. old staghorns are mounted on a nice piece of round cypress. I seldom have this shape of cypress mount. This will be a very durable, rot-resistant mount. There are two plants here, growing side-by-side I may have similarly mounted plants on hickory, pin oak, and sweet-gum. These cypress "rounds" measure and ample, 8-10" in diameter.
2 yr. old staghorn on a "monkey" tree-fern totem. Tree-fern is an extremely well draining natural fiber and will not rot. When plants are mounted on tree-fern, it is practically impossible to overwater. More tropical plants are kiiled by overwatering than by all other causes combined.
The staghorn fronds are 10- 16" long.
ONLY ONE AVAILABLE
Staghorn fern on cork
This is a 12-18 month old staghorn mounted on natural, Portuguese cork.
The pictures were taken 5-30-16. The longest frond is 8-12" and the cork is a generous size. Though cork is my most costly wood, nothing beats natural cork for mounting epiphytic plants!
Keep in mind that this and several other photos were taken of mounted staghorns in May, 2016. I can assure you that all these mounted plants photographed were sold in 2016. Therefore, these photos should only be used as a representation of mounted staghorns on cork (or other woods).
Young Staghorn Ferns
18 month old staghorn seedlings in 6" pots. The fronds are 8-15" long. These plants are 2-3X the size of seedling plants. This is the 'Netherlands' variety. This plant can be grown in a pot, a basket, or can be mounted. These plants are shipped bare-root.
YOU ARE PURCHASING THREE PLANTS
18 month old staghorn growing in 6" pot. The fronds are 8-15" long. This plant is 2-3X the size of a seedling plant. This is the 'Netherlands' variety. This plant can be grown in 1n 8-10" pot or basket or can be mounted. This plant is shipped bare-root.
You are purchasing a single plant.
COMING IN THE SUMMER, 2016 - STAGHORN FERN VARIETIES RARELY SEEN FOR SALE
Platycerium 'Mickey's Rainbow'
This cousin to the bifurcatum is very rarely seen for sale. Compared to the standard staghorn, this variety grows more slowly and presents with very narrow fronds. Their maximum length will be about the same as the bifurcatum (28-32") but rather than 6-12" wide fronds, these fronds will only be 3-6" wide. The fronds on these plants may be over two feet long! This plant is equivalent to a 3-4 year old plant.
FIRST TIME LISTING AND ALL THE MOUNTED PLANTS ARE DIVISIONS FROM AN EIGHT YEAR OLD "MOTHER" PLANT. VERY LIMITED NUMBER OF PLANTS WILL BE AVAILABLE SINCE EACH WILL BE A DIVISION OF THE MOTHER PLANT AND ONLY ONE OR TWO DIVISONS CAN ONY BE TAKEN ONCE A YEAR.
THESE STAGHORNS, WHILE NOT INEXPENSIVE, ARE RADICALLY DIFFERENT THAN WHAT IS NORMALLY SEEN. EACH AND EVERY PLANT AND MOUNT ARE ONE-OF-A-KIND. IF YOU WANT TO ADD A RARE VARIETY TO YOUR COLLECTION AND WANT A ONE-OF-A-KIND MOUNTED PLANT, CONSIDER THIS VARIETY.
This beautiful staghorn is also called the "Silver Staghorn" and "French Staghorn" and hails from Australia. The fronds are very long, very slender, and appear to be coated with silver dust.
ONLY THREE PLANTS ARE AVAILABLE. TWO ARE 18 MO. OLD AND ONE IS A TWO YEAR OLD PLANT. CONTACT ME BEFORE ORDERING TO BE SURE I HAVE THE ONE YOU WANT.
TYPICAL WOOD MOUNTS
MOUNTS AVAILABLE MAY, 2016
NEW WOODS - Ash, Cholla, and Walnut
These various size cypress knees may be partial or complete knees. One side is planed and sealed with chemically cured epoxy. Cypress knees are light in weight and are highly rot-resistant. You can mount plants on either side.
THESE ARE THE MORE TYPICAL SIZE MOUNTS AVERAGING 6" X 13", BUT THEIR SIZES RANGE FROM 6" X 8" UP TO 7" X 14". FOR COMPACT ORCHIDS AND TILLANDSIA, THE SMALL MOUNTS ARE BEST. FOR SMALL STAGHORNS, THE LARGER THE BETTER.
Cork is absolutely the best mounting material available because it is so light weight, will not rot, has the ideal rough, uneven surface for roots to grow into, and does not encourage the growth of mold spores. Cork is sold by the size.
Natural cork is irregular in size and shape, so the sizes you see below are averages of width and height.
THESE KNEES WERE HARVESTED FROM AN AREA ADJACENT TO THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER THAT WAS DRAINED BY THE CORPS OF ENGINEERS DECADES AGO. WITHOUT THE NEEDED SWAMPY LAND, THE CYPRESS TREES WOULD HAVE PERISHED AND THUS WERE LOGGED. THE KNEES WERE LEFT AFTER THE LOGGING AND ARE WELL OVER 100 YEARS OLD. CYPRESS KNEES MAKE UNIQUIE MOUNTS . THIS WOOD IS NOT ONLY BEAUTIFUL BUT IS LIGHT AND RESISTS ROT.
KEEP IN MIND, EVERY MOUNT IS UNIQUE AND ONE-OF-A-KIND, AND THE PICTURES YOU SEE SIMPLY REPRESENT THE GENERAL FORM AND SIZE OF WHAT I HAVE.
YOU WILL NOT FIND THIS SORT OF CYPRESS KNEE MOUNT MATERIAL ANYWHERE ELSE. I can also furnish natural, unfinished cypress knees. Contact me if that's what you want.
MATCHED PAIRS OF CYPRESS KNEES
I have been asked to prepare matching pairs of knees so that one mount can have a plant(s) mounted on the epoxy side and the other mount can have a plant(s) mounted on unfinished side. The mounted plants can be hung side-by-side, thus exhibiting the full knee. This takes a very large knee since the knee must be cut in half, either cross-cut or grain-cut (rip-cut). I have harvested several large knees and now have some matched pairs. What you see is all I have right now, two full-cut knees and one cross-cut knee. One set is tall and one set is wide. A cross-cut (roundish) will be 8-12" in diameter.
YOU WILL NOT FIND THIS SORT OF MOUNT AVAILABLE ANYWHERE ELSE IN AMERICA! THEY ARE NOT ONLY UNIQUE BUT ALSO ONE-OF-A-KIND.
PINE AND CYPRESS MOUNTS
